Second graders writing autobiographies

Where do they visualize themselves when they are my age. The Macmillan website gives a nice list of biographies and autobiographies for middle school students if you want to find other books to read. Have each partner tell the other as much about herself as possible in one minute, then switch.

They practiced citing for evidence in their research as well. Our next spelling list is on Wednesday for our current words annoy, again, alive, alone, apart, among, afraid, begin, between, because, behind, beside.

One way is to begin with the quote and then tie the quote into the opening: Even though I was nervous to read in front of a group of kids, I took my favorite book.

I still loved to read, but I was being assigned more and more novels to read for class. Generally I move the class every twenty minutes because I think first graders need a break after that long.

In the end of the lesson the students will reflect, evaluate, and present their work. Through this book, and books like it, I learned the power of story to take me away from my real life.

2nd Grade Overview

What should a topic sentence do. It is an easy-to-do writing activity as a part of a biographical unit or as a stand alone practice. It seems to help the students remember the goal. I am just assessing what they know about autobiographies at this point, and this allows me to provide more or less support during the lesson.

I read, and reread, this series called Couples. This meant, if they slopped it down in 2 minutes without using their neatest handwriting or they colored their headings without taking care, then they win the opportunity to write it all over again.

Informational Texts

Spelling/Word Work Unit 5 has adopted the Words Their Way program to use for spelling. The second level, writing with revision, may take more time but enables teachers to connect the writing process more fully with mathematics instruction.

Autobiography

My grade 5 Language Arts students wrote simple autobiographies. autobiographies (stories about MY life) biographies (stories about someone else’s life) book reports letters comic books directions fairy tales cards interviews.

This lesson teaches middle school and high school students how to organize and to write an autobiography. First, students should read a published autobiography or biography. They can then start on their own with your guidelines.
